EN The novel Jędza [Hag] by Eliza Orzeszkowa depicts relationships among women, the most prominent being the relationship between Szyszkowa and her daughter Jadwiga. It is a difficult relationship for both women. Jadwiga misses her mother and would like her to be ordinary, warm and loving. The mother hurts Jadwiga’s feelings with unjust criticism and accusations, and interprets anything Jadwiga says to her disadvantage. To describe the protagonists and their relationships, the author repeatedly uses long strings of epithets and detailed descriptions. The relationships are also represented in dialogues, and, above all, in monologues; the latter delivered mainly by Szyszkowa. Persuasive as they are, the monologues resemble sermons given by the mother to coax, influence and preach her daughter. The analysis of linguistic representation of the two protagonists and their relationship shows a toxic mother/daughter relationship, and – given the sociocultural, historical and political context – the entrapment of the two women in their social roles imposed on them in Poland and Europe in the late-1890s.
