EN We consider under what peculiar circumstances of life and for what reasons the physician Sebastian Petrycy (d. 1626) undertook to be the first to philosophize extensively in Polish, translating and insightfully commenting successively on the Aristotelian Economics, Politics and Ethics. For general orientation and to recognize a certain taste of Petrycy’s style, we cite his more important declarations in this original attempt to popularize philosophy in Polish. He taught at the Krakow Academy, from which he was unfortunately removed, hence he dedicated his books with translations of Aristotle and Horace to his powerful patrons. Underestimated properly by his contemporaries, he has only been recognized in research since the 20th century, and not only as a pioneering translator, but also as an original thinker on a wide range of fields and issues. As for his extensive translation and adaptation of Aristotle in the formation of Polish philosophical terminology, there is still much to be studied.
