PL This paper presents a comparative analysis of tool steels applied in cutting forms for paper cutlery manufacturing. The study was initiated after the original tool material, martensitic stainless steel 440C (HRC 56–58), demonstrated insufficient wear resistance plus is easily damaged, broken and required frequent sharpening. Four alternative Uddeholm steels—Sverker 21, Sleipner, Unimax, and Tyrax ESR—were tested under identical production conditions. Two of them (Unimax and Sverker 21) were coated with Duplex-Tigral PVD coating. The objective was to evaluate wear mechanisms, lifetime, and maintenance needs during stamping of 1000 gsm laminated cupstock paper. Tool wear was assessed using visual inspection and 3D scanning after approximately 500,000 cutting cycles. The results revealed that coated Unimax and Sleipner steels offered improved durability and reduced adhesive wear compared to the baseline. Average sharpening intervals increased from 0.5 to nearly 1 million cycles, although below the designed 2 million. Premature wear and paper residue accumulation caused additional downtime of up to 10 days per sharpening. The study highlights that an optimal combination of tool steel grade and PVD coating can significantly reduce maintenance frequency and operational costs in automated paper cutlery production.
